Gypsy Rose Blanchard Case
Gypsy Rose Blanchard conspired with her online boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to murder her mother Dee Dee Blanchard in June 2015. Dee Dee had subjected Gypsy to years of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, fabricating illnesses and forcing unnecessary medical treatments.
Case overview
The Gypsy Rose Blanchard case is one of the most disturbing examples of Munchausen syndrome by proxy (also known as Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another) ever prosecuted in the United States. For nearly all of her 23 years, Gypsy Rose was forced by her mother Dee Dee Blanchard to pretend to be severely ill — subjected to unnecessary medical procedures, confined to a wheelchair she did not need, and isolated from the outside world. In 2015, Gypsy and her online boyfriend conspired to murder Dee Dee, setting off a case that raised profound questions about victimhood, abuse, and accountability. Dee Dee Blanchard told doctors, schools, and charitable organizations that Gypsy suffered from leukemia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, severe food allergies, and other serious conditions. In reality, Gypsy was healthy. Dee Dee fed her false diagnoses to extract sympathy and financial assistance, receiving a charitable home after Hurricane Katrina displaced them from Louisiana in 2005, free trips to theme parks, and significant community support.
Gypsy grew up unable to question her mother, believing she was genuinely ill. As an adult, she secretly corresponded online and eventually met Nicholas Godejohn. In June 2015, Godejohn traveled to Missouri, where Gypsy let him into the home. On June 14, 2015, Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee Blanchard to death while Gypsy waited in another room. The couple then fled to Godejohn's home in Wisconsin. [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/dec/28/gypsy-rose-blanchard-released-prison-missouri)
Police discovered Dee Dee's body after Gypsy posted on Facebook from Dee Dee's account: "That Bitch Is Dead!" Investigators quickly identified Gypsy and Godejohn. Both were arrested within two days. Medical investigators found that Gypsy had no developmental disabilities and could walk normally. The case sparked widespread discussion about whether Gypsy was a victim, a perpetrator, or both, and highlighted how medical child abuse can go undetected for years. [BBC](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66673082)
Gypsy Rose Blanchard was charged with second-degree murder and pleaded guilty on July 5, 2016. In exchange for her cooperation and testimony against Godejohn, prosecutors agreed to the lesser charge. Her defense emphasized the years of abuse she had endured and that she had not been present during the actual stabbing.
She was sentenced to ten years in prison, with credit for time served. Many legal observers and advocates for abuse survivors argued the sentence was fair given her circumstances. The judge noted that while she was clearly a victim of severe abuse, she had also arranged and facilitated a murder.

Gypsy Rose served approximately 8.5 years of her 10-year sentence, earning time off for good behavior. On December 28, 2023, she was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. Her release drew enormous media attention and public fascination. [AP News](https://apnews.com/article/gypsy-rose-blanchard-released-prison-2023)
Since her release, Gypsy Rose has spoken publicly about her experiences, appeared in television interviews, and published a memoir. Her case has been dramatized in multiple television series and documentaries examining Munchausen by proxy and the complex nature of her victimization and culpability.
